There is something rather magical about spotting a hare in the countryside – particularly in that quiet moment when it stops, sits tall and seems to be watching the world around it.

Our Moongazing Hare captures a little of that magic in steel.

Set within a circular frame, the hare sits beneath the moon surrounded by the familiar details of the British countryside: a windswept tree, field fence and dragonflies overhead. Left to develop its naturally warm, rusty finish, the sculpture settles beautifully amongst planting or makes a striking feature against a wall, garden backdrop or open view.

Hares have been woven into British and European folklore for centuries. Mysterious, elusive and most active around dawn and dusk, they became associated with transformation, the changing seasons and the natural world. In British folklore there are even old tales of witches taking the form of hares, while modern Pagan and nature traditions have embraced the moon-gazing hare as a symbol of intuition, renewal and our connection with the cycles of nature.

Perhaps that's why the image of a hare gazing towards the moon still feels so wonderfully timeless.

Handmade by us here in our Devon workshop, this is no lightweight garden ornament. The central scene is laser cut from 5mm mild steel, surrounded by a substantial rolled steel ring, with a heavy steel arc and base supporting the finished sculpture. 

At approximately 25kg, it has real presence. Left outdoors, the steel's naturally weathered surface will continue to develop and change with the seasons, giving every sculpture its own individual character.

A lovely focal point for a cottage garden, wildlife garden or quiet corner – and a particularly thoughtful gift for someone who loves hares, folklore and the British countryside.
